CR Civil Engineering is committed to changing the way we all think and act about mental health; which is why we are supporting this year's World Suicide Prevention Day.
The best way to support, raise awareness and get involved is to talk more, share experiences and look out for our friends, family and colleagues. This week we have encouraged our employees to share their thoughts and stories as we believe by sharing our experiences, we can collectively remove the stigma and promote a positive outcome.
We are working a scheme for on behalf of Highways England for Interserve Construction Ltd on the busy A663 in Chadderton, Oldham. We have used the local church car park as a place for our welfare unit for 3 weeks whilst the church was closed due to COVID19 restrictions. Now the church can re-open on Sunday, ourselves and ICL have laid a fresh gravel car park for the minister and the local community. Due to the church being a part of the street we were completing our works on, this donation will hopefully show some gratitude to local residents for their patience and understanding, in what was a relatively disruptive scheme.
Fantastic to hear that our Anstey Lane scheme, working on behalf of Galliford Try, has been shortlisted in two categories for the British Construction Industry Awards 2020! The scheme has been shortlisted for both the Transport Project of the Year and the Health, Safety and Wellbeing Initiative of the Year.
We are thrilled to announce that CR Civil Engineering is now a National Centre For Diversity (NCFD) Verified Supplier!
During lockdown, the coronavirus pandemic hit the Thornberry Equine Sanctuary hard, like all other charities. We decided to offer our services free of charge to help after they endured flooding and unstable grounds at the Sanctuary.
The track that leads to the Thornberry Equine Sanctuaries extended fields needed repairing, along with the field access point, which had become prone to flooding and dangerous for both horses and staff.
Day 1 at the sanctuary involved repairing the area that flooded and was full of divots, making it dangerous for the horses to cross. This was followed by getting the ground ready for a new gully and drainage to be installed on day 2. Operatives then covered the new drainage and a short fence was installed in order to stop the horses from entering where the drainage exits. A gang of 11 operatives then arrived on site to begin re-constructing the track and the entrance to the field. The Maintenance team who completed the first stage of the works, and the Civils team who completed the second phase, were provided with fish & chips and freshly baked cakes all supplied by the Sanctuary trustees!
A representative from the Sanctuary said:
“In a time when there is a lot of hardship, and the unknown of what will happen, it fills us, as a charity, with hope to be able to share with all our supporters the amazing company that is CR Civil Engineering. We can truly see that this is a company that cares about the community. This ethos also comes across from the workers, every one of them polite, hardworking, caring and organised. This was not just a job, they all cared about the work the Sanctuary did and they were interested in knowing about the horses.”
Today is the first day of Mental Health Awareness Week and the topic for this year is ‘kindness’. Being kind to one another has never been more important and it can go a long way. Be kind to yourself and to those around you. #KindnessMatters
We are delighted to announce that CR Civil Engineering is now officially a member of the 5% Club - Investing in A Generation. 💫🎉 20th Anniversary 🎉 💫

We wanted to invite more of our workforce to celebrate with us, but in light of Coronavirus we decided to avoid unnecessary travelling, so our Loughborough Head Office staff celebrated on the Company’s behalf.

At CR Civil Engineering, we know how important it is to minimise workers exposure to vibration and how difficult it can be to calculate exposure if multiple tools are used in one shift. To help we have developed a HAVS Calculator Smartphone App which Site Managers and Foremen can use to make the calculation as simple as possible.
The first step in using the HAVS calculator app is choosing the tool that you will be utilising for the work activity from the drop-down menu. Once you have selected the tool, the vibration magnitude will be calculated and you will then input in the exposure time box how long you think you will be using the equipment for i.e. 30 minutes. When you have filled out your information, press the calculate button and if the screen appears RED you can't use the tools for the time stated. If the screen appears GREY you can use the tools for the time stated.
The app has currently been rolled out at our operational sites.
CR Civil Engineering held its first Company Safety & Awareness Day on Monday 6th January; with 225 directly-employed staff, and 40 members of our supply chain attending the event. It is another brilliant achievement for the company as we continue to expand and develop each year.
Dishley Pond now has a brand-new 520m footpath network around the pond, with an access to the fishing pegs. The final stage included installing Breedon Group's golden gravel; with an additional 170m laid onto the existing footpaths around the north of the pond. Working closely with Charnwood Borough Council, we are pleased to have been able to give back to the local community and hope that you all enjoy the new path trail!

Eric Towle, our Quantity Surveyor and a friend have entered this year’s Two Ball Banger Rally. The rally involves driving a Ford KA that is worth less than £500 from London to Lisbon, which is roughly 2,000 miles, starting on 4th April and finishing on 8th April.
CR Civils has kindly sponsored the car and sprayed it red, in the theme of Starsky and Hutch (unfortunately, the car will be scrapped at the end!)
There are currently 35 teams taking part, all raising money for different charities. Eric and his friend would appreciate any donations to their chosen charity, PASIC. PASIC provide emotional, social and practical support to families of children and young people with cancer living in the East Midlands.
Hopefully they can hit their target of £250 and let’s hope the car gets all the way to Lisbon! Best of luck both, from all at CR Civil Engineering.

New year, new workshop!
Over the past year, our operatives have worked hard between several busy schemes to deliver various works at the property, which included the construction of a steel frame workshop; alongside ducting, drainage and various groundworks.
We have installed a concrete foundation and erected a 12m x 9m steel framed workshop, 5 metres to eaves. The steel framed workshop is made up of 40mm composite cladding with a washroom/toilet facility situated inside (all installed by various operatives at CR Civils).
The objective is to eventually enable plant, equipment and vehicles to be serviced and repaired at the workshop. February will see the completion of the electrical works within the building, along with our surfacing team visiting South Wales to complete the surfacing requirements.
We’d like to thank all staff associated with the project at Llandeilo for their hard work!
World Mental Health Day took place on 10th October 2018 and on the same day, CR Civils introduced their first Mental Health First Aid Training course.
Since then, we have been offering Mental Health First Aid Training to ALL of our employees who would like to participate and to date, 36 employees have successfully completed the training; with more courses planned for this year.
As a business, we are determined to break the stigma around mental health and build a positive mental health culture within our company. The more we all understand mental health, the more who can identify the signs and potentially save a life. #MentalHealthInConstruction

The garden will play a huge part in the lives of many children and families and we are privileged to have contributed to this. A big thank you to all of our operatives who spent time on the scheme and to Costain & Vinci for allowing us to provide our services for such a fantastic project.

We are proud to announce that we are now officially FORS Bronze accredited.
We are providing brand new footpaths for Charnwood Borough Council in Loughborough, around a local favourite destination at Dishley Pond. We are completing this free of charge to the community, with the works estimated to cost us roughly £15,000.
One of our employees regularly delivers charitable works with organisations to clean local water at canals and ponds. A representative at Charnwood Borough Council then informed them of the need to update the footpath works around Dishley Pond; this was due to a running club who had issues with the route because the footpaths were decrepitating in certain areas. Our employee then recommended CR Civil Engineering to recondition the footpaths. We were very interested and agreed to help the local council by supplying our labour, plant & materials.
The footpath enhancement around Charnwood Dishley Pond includes laying the footpath base with 6N Fill Material and dressing the top with 15mm Golden Gravel. The scheme is going very well so far and we are enjoying being able to provide our services to the local community. The scheme is separated into 3 phases: Phase 1 of the scheme involves siding out and regulating any undulations of the existing footpath to 2m width, which is located north of the pond. This phase for the scheme is now completed and we are looking forward to hearing the positive feedback. Phase 2 involves excavation and construction of new 2m wide footpath, located west of the pond. Phase 3 details are to be confirmed for summer 2019.

Another brilliant review! During the scheme at A64 Barton Hill, several trees had to be removed along with sections of hedgerow, timber and an old stone culvert parapet. Rather than disposing to landfill, these have been donated to various local businesses. One of these businesses is a gin distillery, Sloemotion.
A large oak tree will be transformed into a bar for Sloemotion. Bat and bird boxes are to be created by a local cabinet maker and artist which will be placed along the A64 and around Sloemotion’s base. Some of the removed hedgerows are to be turned into innovative structures to display Sloemotion’s products, and the hand cut stone from the culvert parapet will be used to adorn their new buildings. The Managing Director at Sloemotion had some lovely words to say about the environmental sustainability of the scheme!
We are pleased to announce our sponsorship of a young teenage sensation Lewis Jones, who despite just turning 13, is currently racing in British Junior Superbikes sport class.
Lewis, who attends the school located a stone throw away from our office in Ffairfach, Llandeilo (Ysgol Bro Dinefwr) races against boys up to the age of 22. This year he has raced at Donington, Brands Hatch, Snetterton and Knockhill with Thruxton next on the calendar - a track Lewis is really looking forward to be racing on. Prior to joining British Superbikes, Lewis raced with British Mini Bikes for two years, winning the championship in 2016. Exciting times ahead for Lewis and what a pleasure it is for us to join him on his journey!
CR Civils entered a 4 ball golf tournament at The Trilby Tour, founded by William Hunt, which is the UK's largest and fiercest amateur golf tournament & televised on Sky Sports. This is the first year we have taken part, thanks to one of our foremen who is a club member; we received an invitation to play at Trent Locke. We are very proud of our CR team who played brilliantly, but unfortunately, 8 points short meant we just missed out on playing against the pros! Well done to our guys for participating & playing at such an amazing standard!

Here at CR Civils Health and Safety is not just a department; it’s a way of life. We don’t just comply with the rules and regulations because we have to, we do it because we want to provide a safe and healthy working environment for everyone who works with us, and for us, as well as our customers and any other visitors.
By appointing nominated first aiders and arranging training for them, we have made sure that help is always at hand in the event of sudden illness, an injury or an accident. This help can prevent blood loss and further damage, reduce the risk of infection or wound contamination, and in some cases can even save a life.
Every one of the nominated first aiders at CR Civils has undergone professional training and attended a Three Day First Aid at Work course provided by CE Safety Ltd. These courses cover everything from broken bones and soft tissue injuries to wounds and serious bleeding. Our nominated first aiders are trained in CPR and the use of automated defibrillators, and are shown how to recognise and respond to a range of medical conditions, including anaphylactic shock, stroke, epilepsy and poisoning.
Their professional training enables them to act confidently and competently as first responders, taking control and providing treatment in a major incident, until the emergency services arrive. It also allows them to treat minor injuries and accidents on the spot, providing a vital in-house service for both staff and customers alike.
We appreciate the hard work and dedication of our nominated first aiders, and we are grateful for the protection they provide for us all.
We are incredibly proud and honoured to have received THE award for Most Considerate Company of 2017 from Considerate Constructors Scheme. A huge thank you and well done to everyone involved and praise to our whole CR team for contributing towards this incredible achievement!
